‘It’s the only suit that fits me!’ Wayne Rooney confesses he’s put a ‘little bit of weight on’ after Jamie Carragher poked fun at England and Manchester United legend’s outfit on Sky Sports

  • Wayne Rooney appeared on Monday Night Football with Jamie Carragher
  • They spoke about Manchester United, Everton and the Premier League title race
  • Carragher then made a joke about Rooney’s suit after he was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame
  • And a smiling Rooney explained he was wearing the same suit on the night as it is the ‘only suit that will fit me at the minute’

Wayne Rooney responded to a joke by Jamie Carragher about his suit on Monday Night Football by admitting he has put a ‘little bit of weight on’ since his playing days.

The England and Manchester United legend, and the current manager at Derby County, appeared on Sky Sports this week alongside Jamie Carragher and Dave Jones.

Rooney was recently inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame and as an image appeared on-screen live on-air, ex-Liverpool defender Carragher joked to Jones: ‘Was he inducted today?!’

Jones quickly spotted where Carragher’s jibe was coming from, saying ‘Because of the suit?’, as both laughed in the studio along with Rooney.

The 36-year-old, who retired in January 2021, then explained why he was wearing the same suit on the night: ‘There’s a reason behind that. Obviously over the last year I’ve put a little bit of weight on, it’s the only suit that will fit me at the minute. I have to get the most out of it!’

Carragher and Rooney were team-mates at international level with England, playing together at Euro 2004 and the 20016 and 2010 World Cup.

The Sky Sports regular commented on Twitter after Monday’s show: ‘#MNF was brilliant tonight & that was down to the insight & honesty of Wayne Rooney.’

The pair both felt that Sergio Aguero, Paul Scholes and John Terry deserve to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame currently has 10 former players in it, including Rooney, and six further members are due to be added shortly.

‘I went for Sergio Aguero, who I think has given us the best moment in the Premier League with that goal,’ Carragher said.

‘I then went with John Terry, who I’ve said for years is, in my opinion, the best centre-back in Premier League history. Paul Scholes, one of the absolute greats in midfield.’

Rooney offered no arguments with those three selections from his fellow pundit.

He said: ‘The ones which are the same are Sergio Aguero, one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen. Paul Scholes, in my opinion, it should have been him and Alan Shearer, the first two.’

‘I went with John Terry also. Horrible to play against, dominant for so many years in the Premier League,’ Rooney went on to add.
