GIS– 12 February, 2019: Upgrading works, which started in October 2018, for the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) 2019, are on schedule and are expected to be completed by May this year.  The total cost of upgrading works over all IOIG 2019 competition sites amount to Rs 695.7 million.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint, made this statement today during site visits effected at the different IOIG 2019 competition locations to take stock of progress achieved pertaining to the ongoing upgrading works.  The competition sites are namely: Auguste Vollaire Stadium in Flacq; Anse La Raie Youth Centre; and Anjalay Stadium in Belle Vue Maurel.  The estimated costs for the upgrading of these sites are Rs 37.9 million, Rs 3.2 million and Rs 103.5 million respectively.

Minister Toussaint expressed satisfaction with regards to the progress achieved at the three sites and stated that there is no cost overrun for the upgrades underway.  The works, he highlighted, include the construction of new changing rooms; replacement of flooring; upgrading of plumbing and electrical installations; landscaping works; construction of VIP stands; painting; and roofing.

According to him, since Mauritius aims at becoming the Sports Hub of the Indian Ocean region, the objective of the upgrading works being carried out at various stadiums as well as sports complexes around the island is to provide local and international athletes with proper sports infrastructures both during and after the IOIG 2019.  The works also aim at ensuring that the IOIG 2019 are conducted in the most favourable and best conditions possible, he added.
