Under the British Colonial system, workers (also known as Girmitiyas) were recruited from India on contract to work in various colonies for a minimum period of 5 years. They were promised a new life, good wages and a safe return passage after the contract period was over.
Many Indians especially from the Bhojpuri belt agreed to become indentured labourers and left the country to escape the widespread poverty in India. Most of them did not return home and remained separated from their loved ones.
