The announcement comes as the UAE tightened Covid-19 limits in response to rising global case numbers.
The UAE will ban all unvaccinated nationals from travelling from January 10, according to the country’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA).
The new restrictions also require Emiratis who plan to travel to get a booster vaccine dose, if eligible. Six months after receiving the second vaccination dose, an individual can receive a booster shot.
Individuals who are medically exempt from receiving the vaccine or who are travelling for medical and treatment purposes will be allowed to travel even if they are unvaccinated, according to NCEMA. The organisation also stated that humanitarian travel would be unaffected.
The announcement comes as the UAE tightened Covid-19 limits in response to rising global case numbers.
The Federal Authority for Government and Human Resources (FAHR) announced that unvaccinated government workers would be prohibited from entering their workplaces from January 3.
FAHR stated in a circular issued to all ministries and federal entities that, following the UAE government’s directives regarding the implementation of the “Green Pass Protocol” for all federal government employees, it had decided to standardise all resolutions related to COVID-19 preventive measures to facilitate the work of federal government entities.
NCEMA also reported 2,426 Covid-19 cases on Saturday, the highest daily total for the UAE since early March. The result comes less than a month after the UAE reported the first case of the virus’s highly transmissible Omicrom strain.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, assured Emiratis and residents on Thursday that the health sector is adequately equipped and prepared to deal with any challenges posed by the latest coronavirus wave.
During a discussion at Qasr Al Bahr Majlis, Sheikh Mohamed said that the emerging Covid variant Omicron would take some time to disappear, as earlier strains did.
