There is no denying the roles of NDC in our current travel ecosystem. As we start rebuilding the industry, technology and innovation will be a powerful enabler of change as the airline sector will be at the forefront of recovery as it ferries travellers to beloved destinations.

Even prior to the pandemic, the sector has been moving forward with New Distribution Capability (NDC). Its role in the industry has been stressed more than ever as travellers look for richer content and more tailored products.

Just a brief overview, NDC is the new era of airline retailing and the modern way air products are sold to consumers. NDC enhances the archaic system that was developed before the Internet was invented. This initiative allows airlines to push richer content to travel agencies and corporate booking tools and, in turn, enables travel agents to customise offers to travellers. It is a technological advancement needed by every sector.

Here are the three important roles of NDC that can help rebuild the travel industry we knew and loved.

Personalised products

Travel industry players can differentiate their offers to help their brand stand out. The industry recognises that no two travellers are alike. NDC allows airlines to create and distribute their products. Thus, travel sellers can customise offers for their clients.

Alongside, the unique no one size fits all approach, gone are the days of flight shopping showing only a flight from departure X to destination Y. One of the roles of NDC in the industry is enabling airlines can now push different types of media, service descriptions and information on amenities and branded fares to make their brand discernible from others. Moreover, NDC creates room to experiment and create unique digital retailing strategies and respond more quickly to changing market demands.

Elevation of customer service

Travellers are now able to access more information and make better-informed choices with less time. Booking a flight without servicing capabilities is not good customer service. The end-to-end integration of NDC also allows advanced servicing capabilities for NDC-sourced content, so travellers can change, modify or cancel a booking quickly with just a few clicks. As the process becomes smoother and faster, this creates an opportunity to improve customer service and allows airlines and travel sellers to provide that extra human touch in resolving the complexity of the travel planning experience.

NDC enables airlines to distribute their entire product portfolio, including ancillaries and promotional fares. Airlines can also offer value-added products and services when applicable.

Co-existing climate

Another role of NDC in the industry is paving the way for travel technologies to co-exist. Amadeus has been involved in the creation of NDC and was the first travel tech player to implement XML in our global distribution system. NDC is a key strategic priority for Amadeus, even as we continue to face the challenges of COVID-19. For travel sellers and corporations, we bring together all content, including NDC, in one platform, based off open systems, called the Amadeus Travel Platform. Travel technologies like the Amadeus Travel Platform will work to provide a bridge between the coexisting technologies to help ease the journey in bridging the two technologies.

Renaud Nicole, senior vice president, Travel Sellers, North Asia, Amadeus said, “We continue to unlock new opportunities with NDC in Asia Pacific. NDC is all about the journey, where it gives greater clarity on strategies by connecting a traveller’s needs with personalized, tailored offers from airlines and travel sellers that ultimately deliver an improved experience for travellers. Amadeus will continue to make NDC a key strategic priority as we rebuild travel.”

NDC ensures that travel agents and travel management companies stay up-to-date on each airlines’ newest offers and products. This allows you to see the full range of products and services available to you.

The great news is, Amadeus is in it for the long haul!

Renaud Nicole, senior vice president, Travel Sellers, North Asia, Amadeus added, “Great progress has been made on NDC globally but more can be done to standardized NDC. Continuous dialogue and experimentation with NDC are strategic imperatives, enabling us to create a deeper understanding and fully realized the benefits of NDC both on the bottom line and in elevating traveller experience. We will continue to work with our industry partners to improve the future of travel retailing as we transform and rebuild the travel industry.”

Meanwhile, customers acknowledge the roles of NDC in rebuilding travel after the devastating effects of COVID 19 pandemic. Moreover, they recognise Amadeus’ well-rounded approach to NDC.

Nathan Smeulders, senior distribution manager at Qantas said, “We recognized our seller partner challenges around servicing early on and we’ve gone all out to make sure we’re meeting their needs.”

Niall White, director at House of Travel said, “The Amadeus Travel Platform is a breath of fresh air for consultants. It’s graphical, intuitive and as easy to use as any desktop productivity tool. We can train a new consultant to begin selling differentiated airline offers in a matter of hours. It doesn’t matter if the content is sourced from NDC or EDIFACT, it’s the same shopping experience.”
