The Mauritius dodo (Common Dodo) became extinct in 1680. When first discovered, it was variously described as a wild turkey, a cassowary, or a bastard ostrich. It was actually a giant, flightless dove. Modern research suggests it was not as gentle as once supposed; adult dodos could be aggressive, territorial and fight back. #evolutionsoup #evolution #paleo #paleontology #paleoartist #Homosapiens #hominid #art #artwork #illustration #Darwin #cave #bone #fossils #Neanderthal #cromagnon #hominin #extinct #animals #science #dodo #mauritius #anthropology #extinct #paleoanthropology #genus #species #africa #skull #skulls
