STC and MauBank formalise their partnership as Gold and Silver sponsors

GIS – 6 March 2019: The State Trading Corporation (STC) and the MauBank are, as Gold and Silver sponsors respectively, contributing Rs 6 million and Rs 3 million each to the holding of the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) 2019 in Mauritius this July.  Both institutions in fact formalised their partnership, yesterday, with the IOIG’s organising committee during a signature ceremony held at the Citadelle Mall in Port Louis.

 

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint, the General Manager of the STC, Mr Rajanah Dhaliah, and the Chief Executive Officer of Maubank, Mr Premchand Mungar, were present. 

 

At the very outset, the Minister showed his appreciation to the STC and the MauBank for extending their collaboration with IOIG’s organising committee in this sporting endeavour.  He recalled that the partnership of all stakeholders will help achieve the different set objectives with regards to IOIG 2019 which include contributing to the development of sports and consolidating bonds of friendship and brotherhood.  He also urged citizens to rally and support local athletes during the Games and appealed to Mauritian sportspersons to give their best during the sporting competitions.

 

For his part, Mr Dhaliah, reassured IOIG’s organising committee that STC will extend all its support to make the 2019 Games a resounding success.  He expressed confidence that the hosting of IOIG in Mauritius will enable citizens to show their sense of patriotism which will lead to strengthening ties not only within the Mauritian society, but also among the peoples of the Indian Ocean region.

 

The CEO of Maubank spoke of MauBank’s commitment vis-à-vis IOIG 2019 which he said is motivated by the national dimension of the sporting event as well as the Games strong influence in uniting the entire Mauritian population as a whole.  Moreover, he indicated that MauBank is associated with the Games because it shares the tenets for sports, which is a transmitter of values such as team spirit, respect, discipline, tolerance, perseverance, cooperation and solidarity.

 

Jeux des Iles en Couleurs

Following the signature ceremony, Minister Toussaint held a press conference to announce that his Ministry, as part of the celebrations of Independence Day, will organise a Youth Carnival on Monday 11 March 2019. The theme of the carnival will be “Jeux des Iles en couleurs” and will consist of a competition based on animation, creativity and innovation. The awards will be cash prizes of Rs 100 000, Rs 75 000 and Rs 50 000.

He also announced that in order to sensitise the public on road safety, especially cyclists, the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport, will organise a competition, “pédaler en sécurité” on Saturday 9 March 2019 in Curepipe. In this context, 20 supervisors were trained during three months and made to travel the itinerary of 8 kms from St Joseph College in Curepipe and back to the college so as to ensure safety of participants.

The objectives of “Pédaler en securité” are to encourage members of the public to practise cycling on a regular basis as a leisure activity and to stay physically fit; create public awareness on the need of training for bicycle riders; and, promote cycling as an environmentally sound, affordable and healthy form of transportation.

Furthermore, the Minister seized the opportunity to congratulate and encourage the athletes of Special Olympics World Games-the world’s largest sports organisation for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities-who will be going to Abu Dhabi on 07 March to compete in the 2019 Special Olympics set from 14 to 21 March 2019.
