Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aiming to protect Paul Pogba for Premier League run-in as Manchester United boss plans to ease him back into action by naming Frenchman on the bench when they resume season at Tottenham

  • Midfielder has not played since Boxing Day due to troublesome ankle problem
  • Following a long period of rehabilitation, Pogba is available for selection again
  • But Solskjaer plans to keep faith with Fernandes, Fred, McTominay and Matic

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to ease fit-again Paul Pogba back into his starting XI when they face Tottenham on Friday night.

The France international hasn’t played since Boxing Day – and has played just eight times all season – due to troublesome ankle problem.

Following a long period of rehabilitation, Pogba is available for the restart of United’s campaign but is poised to start Friday’s clash against former boss Jose Mourinho on the bench as boss Solskjaer takes a careful approach towards getting his midfielder back to full match fitness.

It means fans will have to wait a little longer to see midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Pogba start a match together for the first time.

Pogba has not played since Boxing Day and has featured just twice since September due to a number of ankle issues, but the French World Cup winner is now fully fit after the coronavirus lockdown put football on hold for three months.

Manchester United are on an 11 game unbeaten run and Solsjkaer will, for the time being, keep faith with Fernandes, Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic in his midfield area.
