Champagne Charlie falls flat AGAIN… Sky Sports pundit Nicholas’ joke to Jim White is met with painfully awkward silence in studio as Scot adds to ‘Specsavers’ rant in blooper reel

  • Charlie Nicholas’ attempted joke fell horribly flat live on Sky Sports News
  • He was covering Manchester United’s game against West Ham from studio
  • He said: ‘This game reminds me of your wallet, Jim, it doesn’t open very often’
  • Nicholas previously went viral for an awkward exchange with Jeff Stelling

Charlie Nicholas added another painfully uncomfortable moment to his blooper reel on Wednesday night as his joke live on Sky Sports News fell flat.

While covering Manchester United‘s 1-1 draw with West Ham from the studio, the Scot attempted to aim a playful barb at Jim White.

In describing the action, he quipped: ‘This game probably reminds me of your wallet, Jim, it doesn’t open very often!’

His joke was met with a stony silence and Nicholas was left appearing incredibly uncomfortable.

The 58-year-old was waiting what seemed like an age for a reply. It was a full six seconds of dead air before White’s voice could be heard.

Nicholas then took a huge gulp of tea which only added to the comic effect of the scene.

But perhaps all was not as it seemed and the gag hadn’t gone down like a lead balloon after all.

White’s voice is heard again mid-way through a sentence so perhaps there were technical difficulties that cut off his response to Nicholas’ joke.

It is not the first time the former Arsenal man has gone viral online and his Specsavers rant at Jeff Stelling will live long in the memory.

On that occasion he was remarking on an offside, saying: ‘He should have timed his run and certainly he was in on goal, offside given against him.’

Stelling retorted: ‘You should have gone to Specsavers Charlie because I tell you what, he’s not offside, he’s absolutely bang in line.’

Nicholas clumsily hit back: ‘Well, maybe you should go also then Jeff because you couldn’t see driving home the other night, because you, you don’t even wear your glasses on TV in case you get slagged off. You just stick to Specsavers and I’ll do the game.’

Ironically Nicholas’ attempts at humour have ended up as hilarious clips shared around online but not for the ‘banter’ he intended.
