Six Seychellois test positive for COVID-19
Six Seychellois employed with a Port Victoria based company have tested positive for COVID-19.
While they are not showing any symptoms, they have been admitted at the Isolation Center, at the Family Hospital, Perseverance.
The six individuals were working as either drivers or handymen and they handled the seafarers who came into the country two weeks ago for a crew change on board Spanish tuna fishing vessels.
To date the mariners who have tested positive for the virus are from Spain, Kenya, Benin, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Bukina Faso.
The six Seychellois were under the radar of the Public Health Authority as they were quarantined at home.
Contact tracing is underway to identify all persons who have been in contact with the six persons. More than 100 people are being traced.
Speaking to the press this afternoon, Dr. Jude Gedeon who is the Public Health Commissioner, has urged people to ‘tell the truth’ so as to enable ‘contact tracing’.
Dr. Gedeon has described these new cases as a ‘cluster’ and not community transmission.
‘Community transmission happens when the source of an infection is not known.’
Currently there are 85 active positive COVID-19 cases in the country.
For the time being the authorities are not contemplating a lock down.
The country’s border is due to open for commercial flights on 01st August.
