The Safe City project, the Prime Minister indicated, integrates surveillance cameras, 1 542 Intelligent Video Surveillance System (IVS) – a smart camera for capturing good definition images within a 200-meter radius of people in motion – and, 142 Intelligence Traffic Surveillance System (ITS), which has the ability to enter the license plate number of vehicles travelling on highways in several regions of Mauritius.
The Safe City project, said the Prime Minister, is based on six main pillars, the PMCCC being one of them along with the ITS. The Command Centre, he added, will play a crucial role in the fight against crimes through its advanced, integrated state-of-the-art technological solutions, together with a coordinated approach with police officers on the ground.
According to Mr Jugnauth, the Safe City project essentially aims at ensuring the safety and security of citizens of the country and visitors alike. Efficient and effective policing will act as a deterrent in the prevention of crime and facilitate decision- making, he stated.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the use of real time information will enable the prevention as well as proper handling of various emergencies, accidents and disasters by detection, monitoring, warning, and emergency treatment. This will ensure that the society remains safe and secure with the integration of emergency services, fire services and public health agencies.
Prime Minister Jugnauth also indicated that the Safe City Project consists of the implementation of a whole ecosystem that will provide adequate tools to the Mauritius Police Force and emergency services, as well as enhance the responsiveness, efficiency, better monitoring and management of police resources.
