Republic of Mauritius- Travelling exhibition to mark International Year of Periodic Table of Chemical Elements

The exhibition, an initiative of the RGSC, aims at showcasing firstly, the history of the discovery of the periodic table and the scientists who contributed to the importance of the elements in society, and secondly, a series of hands-on exhibits to engage the audience in discovery and challenge based learning. It will be touring secondary schools during the 1^st and 2^nd semester of academic year 2019 and 2020 and is targeting all classes, in particular, science students.

In a statement, the Chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre Trust Fund, Dr Jayantee Naugah stated that the RGSC will be conducting science shows, lectures and film shows in the secondary schools to arouse students’ interest in science subjects and encourage them to opt for science subjects at higher level. The activities also aim to bridge the gap between science, chemistry and society; raise national awareness on the importance of chemical elements, chemistry and sustainable development issues related to the use of science and technology; and engage students to engage in contextual learning of chemistry by participating in chemistry based activities at school level, she added.

IYPT 2019

The IYPT 2019 is a worldwide initiative to highlight the importance of the Periodic Table in science, technology, and sustainable development of humankind. The Periodic Table of Chemical Elements is a unique tool, enabling scientists to predict the appearance and properties of matter on the Earth and in the rest of the Universe.

In this context, the RGSC is organising a series of activities during the year to celebrate the IYPT 2019, namely, seminar/discussion forums; workshops; science week and sky observation programmes, amongst others.
