Republic of Mauritius- Some Rs 126 million raised in the Covid-19 Solidarity Fund, states Finance Minister

GIS ​- 05 May, 2020: The
Covid-19 Solidarity Fund amounts to some Rs 126 million from various
contributions reveived at date and no disbursement from the fund has been made,
indicated the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr
Renganaden Padayachy, in reply to a Parliamentary Question pertaining to the
Covid-19 Solidarity Fund today in the National Assembly.

He
recalled that the Fund, established under the Finance and Audit (COVID-19
Solidarity Fund) Regulations 2020, will contribute to the financing of
projects, programmes and schemes related to the Covid-19 and other related
public health issues. It will help provide financial assistance to
organisations and individuals affected during the curfew and the recovery
period as well as strengthen the preparedness of the country in the face of
such outbreaks.

The
Finance Minister highlighted the contributions made to the fund by national and
international organisations, public enterprises and statutory bodies, private
sector and individuals, amongst others.

To this
end, he added that clear and transparent criteria have been finalised by the
COVID-19 Solidarity Fund Framework and Operating Guidelines which include the
guiding principles; definition of beneficiaries; areas of intervention;
implementation mechanism; and terms of application.

He also
stated that a Managing Committee comprising of representatives of Ministries
and Departments has been established and that the latter is having regular
meetings to identify the modalities and the way forward for the disbursement of
funds.
