GIS – 19 February, 2019: A joint operation of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) and the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) on 14 February 2019 at the SSR International Airport, led to the arrest of a Venezuelan with one kilogram of dangerous drugs worth Rs 15 million.

The suspect, aged 35 years, was intercepted while leaving through the Green Channel of the Airport on the basis of risk indicators. He had swallowed some 100 pellets of dangerous drugs.

Prior to his arrest, the suspect was subjected to intensive questioning by the officers of the CANS, to whom he gave evasive answers, thus leading to an in-depth inquiry and medical examination by the ADSU.  The Venezuelan had initially departed from Brazil and transited through Ethiopia and Kenya to eventually land in Mauritius.

It is recalled that the MRA is committed to the fight against drugs and illicit trade in Mauritius.  Its Stop Drug Platform remains open to members of the public who may report suspected drug and illicit activities.
