Republic of Mauritius- Residence Anthurium at Henrietta inaugurated

GIS 31 May  2019: Residence Anthurium, the latest housing estate of the National Housing Development Company (NHDC), to the tune of Rs 215.7 million, was inaugurated in Henrietta, yesterday afternoon, by the Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Purmanund Jhugroo.  Several personalities were also present.

 

The project, which kicked off in November 2016 and was completed in May 2018, comprises some 82 Duplex blocks forming 164 Housing Units of net floor area of 50 m2, each with water, electricity and sewage connections as well as individual yards. It also includes associated infrastructural works such as footpath and drainage network, an open-air children playground, a pétanque court, a badminton court and individual parking space within each plot.

 

In his address, Minister Jhugroo underscored Government’s commitment in providing affordable decent housing to low-income groups so that every Mauritian lives in dignity. “Our housing policy does not only focus on providing a decent housing unit but also offering a decent living environment,” he stated.

 

Government’s priority, he said, is the construction of housing units for people at different rungs of the social ladder as well as fighting absolute poverty. Since the beginning of 2015, he pointed out, many recreational facilities have been provided on each site of NHDC projects such as green spaces, children playgrounds, pétanque courts and health tracks. By the end of June 2020, 4 955 Housing Units are expected to be completed, he added.

Moreover, the Minister indicated that Housing Units are being constructed in Montagne Longue, Camp Levieux and Chebel, among others. The NHDC, he emphasised, has an established eligibility criteria for the allocation of Housing Units.  He also urged the beneficiaries to abide by the rules namely compliance to loan repayment conditions, and respecting their living environment and provided infrastructure and amenities. He further called on beneficiaries to adhere to the parameters and standards outlined in the housing contracts.

Speaking about ongoing development projects, the Minister cited the Metro Express project which he said will constitute a revolutionary venture for the public transport sector and will change Mauritius and the lives of citizens. Other projects, he added, include the construction of: flyovers to eliminate traffic jam; a bridge linking Soreze to Coromandel; a modern Multisport Complex in Côte d’Or; a new Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Hospital; and, a Cancer Hospital.
