Republic of Mauritius- Prime Minister Jugnauth urges the population to adopt a physically active lifestyle

GIS – 08 April, 2019: Good health is the most precious asset of a person that ensures a brighter future for him and his country. Indeed, sports considerably helps a person to maintain a good health, lead a better personal life, and achieve better productivity to contribute to the country’s progress.


The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement on Friday 5 April 2019 at the inauguration of the Quartier Militaire market fair. The regional market fair comprises a cultural space, a new Parking space, a recreational space as well as a new village Council Room with leisure area, a gymnasium and other amenities. The laying of foundation stone of the Quartier Millitaire Futsal Complex was held on the same occasion.

 

In his address, the Prime Minister underscored Government’s vision to foster a sports culture among the population so as to ensure that all citizens enjoy a good health for their personal progress and to eventually contribute to the socioeconomic progress of Mauritius.  According to him, a change of mindset is important for everyone to understand the importance of adopting an active lifestyle and the importance of undertaking a regular physical activity as per his physical strength.

 

Government, the Prime Minister stated, is already carrying out its national sensitisation campaign on the need to foster a sports culture among citizens, adding that a sports programme has been launched in schools to promote the adoption of a sports culture among students. This initiative, he pointed out, will also enable them to discover their talents and potential, and they will also be provided with the necessary guidance to become a sportsperson.  On that note, he urged everyone, irrespective of their age, to engage in sports, recalling that various facilities are being provided such as health tracks in all regions and well-equipped gymnasiums.

 

The Prime Minister also spoke about Government’s vision to spearhead development as per the aspirations of the population and to ensure their well-being and the long term progress of Mauritius. He dwelt on Government’s aim to modernise and transform the landscape of the country to enhance quality of life of the population. Referring to the Metro Express project, he stated that it is poised to be the major developmental project of Mauritius that will provide better connectivity and an improved modern transport system that will eventually be extended to other regions of the country.  He also announced two key projects in the pipeline, namely a Mediclinic that will be soon constructed in the neighborhood, and an Administrative city.  

 

Moreover, Mr Jugnauth reiterated Government’s determination to combat the drug scourge to protect the population and in particular the youth. He observed that people should invest more of their time and energy in doing positive activities that will have good impacts on their life and their society.

 

Also present at the event, the Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Yogida Sawmynaden, spoke about Government’s determination of modernising the whole country. He expressed satisfaction as regards the major infrastructural development undertaken in Quartier Militaire aimed at enhancing the living conditions of the members of the community. Furthermore, he underlined Government’s determination to concretise projects that are aimed at ensuring the well-being of the population as well as the socioeconomic progress of Mauritius.  

 

As for the Minister of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, she lauded the innovative project of the District Council of Moka/Quartier Millitaire, which she said is in line with Government’s core objective of providing the population with the necessary infrastructure and facilities to lead a healthy and modern lifestyle. With the new modern amenities, the community will be able to adopt a new lifestyle and undertake social activities in better conditions, she added.

 

Moreover, the Minister recalled that Government’s main objective behind the current educational reform underway, is to ensure the integral development of the youth so that they develop both academic and life skills.  To this end, she said, Government is making accessible social spaces and facilities wherein youths and other members of the society can thrive socially and develop their potential and talents.
