Republic of Mauritius- Prime Minister announces Budget 2020/21 presentation for 4 June

GIS – 21 May, 2020: The Prime Minister, Mr. Pravind Jugnauth announced the presentation of the Budget
2020/21 for 4th June 2020 and stressed that the first and foremost priority of
his Government is to preserve employment, in a statement to the Mauritius Broadcasting
Corporation(MBC) tonight. He also answered questions
regarding the 2020/21 Budget and the impact of the Covid-19 on the Mauritian
economy.

He spoke of his meeting this afternoon, with the
Minister of Finance, Economic Planningand Development, Dr. Renganaden Padayachy,
in the presence of the Financial Secretary, Mr. Dev Manraj, to take stock of
the three days of pre-budget consultations which ended today.

Following this meeting, the Prime Minister answered
questions from the MBC. He recalled that this is an unprecedented crisis and no
one knows when it will end. “We need to prepare for the many challenges that
will come our way,” he added.

He made and appeal to all stakeholders to collaborate
so as to get the country out of this crisis. He also spoke about several issues,
namely on the measures taken by the authorities to preserve employment, to guarantee
the salaries of employees, and to financially assist the most vulnerable of the
society and those working in the informal sector.

Recalling that, according to the International Monetary
Fund, the world economy will not recover before several years, Mr. Jugnauth
stressed that his Government has set as specific priorities the relaunch of
investment and economic activities in the country.

As for the Covid-19 situation in Mauritius, the
Prime Minister believes that the measures implemented to limit the spread of
the virus, have proved successful as the country has not recorded any new positive
case since the last three weeks.
