GIS – 27 March, 2019: Pope Francis will visit Mauritius on 9 September, this year, and will celebrate a mass at Marie Reine de la Paix, the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, announced, this afternoon at a press conference, in the presence of Cardinal Maurice Piat and other personalities.

The Prime Minister recalled that he sent an invitation to the Vatican in November 2018, inviting the Pope to visit Mauritius. It is an honour and a great priviledge for us all, that Pope Francis has agreed to visit our multicultural country, he stated.

The visit of the Pope will be a State visit, prepared with the collaboration of the Diocese of Port Louis, pointed out Mr Jugnauth. A delegation from the Vatican was here earlier this month to effect site visits in the context of the forthcoming papal visit, he added.

The Prime Minister expressed the wish that the population welcomes Pope Francis with the same enthusiasm and pomp as that received by Pope John II when he visited Mauritius in 1989.

For his part, Cardinal Piat stated that the Pope is a messenger of peace and his visit to Mauritius is being awaited not only by Christians but by all Mauritians. He added that Pope Francis will also be visiting Mozambique and Madagascar from 4 to 10 September 2019.
