GIS – 01 August 2019:A Passing out Parade for temporary police constables enlisted in January 2019 was held, this morning, at the Line Barracks in Port Louis. The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit and Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, several Ministers as well as the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mario Nobin, and other eminent personalities were present on the occasion.

The passing out parade coincided with the 252nd anniversary of the Mauritius Police Force (MPF). Some 469 temporary police constables participated in the Passing out Parade, after having followed a 24-week intensive training comprising both theoretical and practical sessions. The theoretical aspect includes police procedures, administration, and law and order procedures while the practical aspect focuses on weapon training, techniques of arrest, physical training and self-defence, amongst others. The trainees have also participated for the first time in community service. The objective was to develop team spirit among them, to maintain a good relationship in the community, to enhance socialisation and to promote a clean and healthy environment in the workplace.

In his address to the new recruits, Prime Minister Jugnauth emphasised that as law enforcement agents, they need to be versatile so as to ensure the security and safety of citizens as well as visitors in all kinds of emergencies. Temporary police constables, he added, who represent the future of the MPF, should always be driven by core principles such as professionalism, loyalty, hard work. The Prime Minister exhorted the new recruits to perform their duty with integrity, highest moral standards and without any involvement in illegal and corrupt practices, while adding that they should live up to the legitimate expectations of the population and keep the Police department’s standards high.

He pointed out that Government, in its endeavour and commitment to transform the country into a modern one, has always ensured that the various institutions and public bodies in the country are adequately equipped to perform their roles and functions effectively. He further stated that there are clear indicators that Mauritius is faring well on the law and order issue and that a positive climate has been created for economic development.

It is to be noted that several measures have been taken to provide the MPF with state of the art equipment and infrastructure in a bid to ensure better service delivery and increased operational effectiveness. They include: new police stations at Moka, Saint Pierre, Camp Diable and other regions of the island; the setting up of a police training academy at Côte d’Or; and the installation of Intelligence and Traffic Surveillance cameras, amongst others.
