Republic of Mauritius- National Youth Civic Service programme to shape character of young Mauritians

GIS– 14, February 2019: The National Youth Civic Service (NYCS), a new youth development programme which aims at shaping the character of youngsters aged between 17 to 25 years, was launched last Friday by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Vacoas. The programme was officially rolled-out on Monday 11 February 2019.

This highly dynamic and creative programme will enable participants to develop competence, confidence, character, compassion, communication skills and will enhance their employability profile so as to prepare them for the world of work.  It also has as objectives to promote a spirit of citizenship among the youth while empowering them to address life challenges.

 

The NYCS, offered over 18 consecutive weeks, will be conducted by trained coaches in 10 youth centres across Mauritius.  The youth centres are Bambous, Flacq, Floreal, Helvetia, Pamplemousses, Rivière du Rempart, Roche Bois, Rose Belle, Trèfles and Souillac. Participants will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1000.

 

The programme focuses on nine key elements which are namely, Personal Branding; Creativity and Innovation; Millennials Style; Born to Move; Self-Empowerment; Rethinking the Future; Volunteering; Words to Live and Character Focus.  It will comprise mostly practical sessions such as residential camps, field visits, placement and competitions.
