Republic of Mauritius- Mauritius proudly hosts 10th edition of Indian Ocean Islands Games

GIS – 19 July, 2019: The 10th edition of the Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG), proudly hosted by Mauritius, officially opened this evening. The regional multisports event regrouping some 2000 athletes from Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion Island, and Seychelles was launched by the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth in presence of several eminent personalities of Mauritius and other islands.

In his address, the Prime Minister expressed delight and pride in Mauritius hosting the IOIG 2019 and stated that it is a historical moment for each and every one to join hands in unity, fraternity and solidarity so as to support their respective teams. The IOIG 2019, he said, will enable to enhance regional cooperation through the development of sports in the region, and build friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of the islands of the Indian Ocean.

 

With regard to the Multisports Complex at Cote D’or, Mr Jugnauth stated that it is to become a centre of excellence for the practice of sports in Mauritius and it is a state of art infrastructure that will remain for future generations, carrying forward the legacy of a sporting culture. 
The passing of the Torchlight across Mauritius, the song Tam Tam dan Zil and the official IOIG 19 Mascot Krouink have all contributed to creating the splendour of the Games. The Prime Minister took the opportunity to encourage athletes to give their best performances and make of this event a memorable one. 

 

For his part, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint stated that the holding of the Games in Mauritius symbolically represents the existing fraternity among islands of the region. He paid tribute to the 40 years of the existence of the IOIG and expressed satisfaction towards the Organising Committee of the IOIG 19 for their engagement in ensuring that the Games are held in best conditions. He seized the opportunity to congratulate the Mauritian team for their remarkable performance in swimming earlier today.

 

During the next nine days, participants will be competing for medals across 14 different sports disciplines namely, athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volley, boxing, cycling, football, judo, rugby, sailing, swimming, table tennis, volleyball and weightlifting.
