GIS – 21 March 2020: The Attorney General has given additional powers to the Commissioner of Police to take legal actions against those who are not respecting the National Confinement implemented since yesterday by the Government following cases of the Covid-19 on the Mauritian territory.

This was announced today during a press conference held by the National Communication Committee on Covid-19 under the Chairmanship of Dr Z. Joomaye, at the Prime Minister’s Office.

DCP K. Jughroo noted that following the soft approach of the police yesterday, it has been noted that many individuals are not respecting the laws as regards the National Confinement, thus the need for the Police to be more severe in its approach towards these persons.

He highlighted that the main role of the Police in this situation is to help the population and that this can only be achieved mutually. He further pointed out that the confinement is for the benefit of the whole population as it will only help to reduce the spread of the Covid-19.

He also announced that the quarantine centres have been declared restricted areas and appealed to parents whose wards are returning from abroad not to come to the airport as they will not be given access to the compound.

DCP Jughroo reiterated that the Police Force is here to help the population at large and relies on the collaboration and support of each and every one in these trying moments.
