Republic of Mauritius- Mauritius Police Force equipped with high-tech equipment

GIS – 07 February, 2019: Government is implementing several measures to modernise the Mauritius Police Force and put at its disposal high-tech equipment so as to reinforce capability in emergency and disaster situations. The police is responsible for keeping people safe and reducing crime rate and new technology will enable the Police Force to keep up with new types of crime.

The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth made this statement, yesterday, at the inauguration ceremony of the new Police Station in St Pierre in presence of other personalities.

He underscored that security, and law and order to Mauritian citizens is one of Government’s main priorities. He listed out Government’s projects implemented since 2015, namely the construction and renovation of Police Stations at La Gaulette, Poudre d’Or, Moka, St Pierre and Petit Gabriel in Rodrigues. The aim behind the construction of new police stations across the Republic is to promote efficiency within the Mauritius Police Force, he said.

The Prime Minister further affirmed that Government is investing in new technology to upgrade equipment used by the Police Force to prevent, detect, combat crimes and juvenile delinquency.

As regards to the Safe City Project, the Prime Minister said that it comprises the installation of some 4 000 intelligent surveillance cameras, 4 500 trunking smart handsets, 500 trunking vehicle radios and an Emergency Response System. The project will help in cutting crime, fighting drug trafficking and decreasing the number of road accidents, he stressed.

Furthermore, Mr Jugnauth highlighted two major projects which are in the pipeline namely the construction of a Divisional Headquarters in Rose Belle and a Sub-Divisional Headquarters in Moka. The contracts for consultancy of a new Police Headquarters at Cote d’Or and the construction of a Discipline Forces Academy have been launched, he added.
