GIS -21 February, 2019: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) wants to build partnership with Mauritius and establish a Fintech self-regulatory organisation as well as a Fintech incubator with the expertise of leaders in Europe.

The objective is to bring the Fintech industry in Mauritius to the next level through the collaborative efforts of the United Nations, the government of Mauritius and the private sector. The first Fintech will be SDG-friendly (sustainable development goals) and will not cause any disruption to small and medium enterprises.

The Regional Representative of the UNODC, Dr Amado Phillip de Andres, made this statement this afternoon following a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit and Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis. Dr Amado Philip de Andres is currently in Mauritius in the context of the forthcoming 62nd Commission on Narcotic Drugs Ministerial Meeting which will be held on 14 and 15 March 2019 in Vienna.

He stated that the meeting will take stock of the implementation of the commitments made by Member States to jointly address and counter the world drug problem. The ministerial segment will include a general debate as well as two interactive, multi-stakeholder round tables, to be conducted in parallel with the general debate, he added. During the meeting, the leadership role of Mauritius in its fight against drugs will be discussed as well as new challenges and new psychotropic substances.

The Regional Representative of the UNODC also dwelt on the meeting with Heads of the Police Department scheduled for September this year where the financing of terrorism, drug trafficking, criminality and enhanced cooperation between different stakeholders will be discussed.

Dr Amado Philip de Andrés was appointed the UNODC Regional Representative for Eastern Africa and took up his new assignment in Nairobi on 18 December 2017.
