GIS – 08 April, 2019: A learning centre aiming at enhancing community interaction and providing sugar planters, who are registered under the Social Register of Mauritius (SRM), with appropriate infrastructure for learning activities, was inaugurated on Friday 5 April 2019 by the Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment, Mr Alain Wong, in Pointe aux Sables.

The setting up of the learning centre, which is in line with the Ministry’s vision in providing a more inclusive and equitable quality education, aims at complementing the main school curriculum and enhancing the educational level of beneficiaries of the region.  The Centre has been constructed on a plot of State Land allocated by the Ministry of Housing and Lands.

In his address, Minister Wong reiterated Government’s pledge to provide equal educational opportunities to all.  Government, he stated, is committed to help beneficiaries of SRM to overcome their vulnerability and ultimately to form part of the 2 000 people who do not need social aid anymore due to the support and training that they have obtained through the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF) and the Ministry.

Furthermore, the Minister dwelt on the various facilities offered by the NEF to better improve the quality of teaching and learning in the Centre.  They comprise: the installation and refurbishment of two pre-fabricated units for the setting up of the Learning Centre comprising of two rooms and toilet facilities; the provision of fence and a gate to demarcate the area of the Centre; and the provision of desks, chairs, filing cabinets and office tables. In this conducive environment and setting, children using the Centre will be able to learn at their own pace and develop their self-confidence, he added.

Minister Wong also underlined the importance of adhering to the parameters and standards listed in the rules and regulations of the Learning Centre.  On this score, he appealed to the beneficiaries to keep the Centre, which has been constructed for their own benefit, clean and safe.

The inauguration of the Centre also coincided with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the NEF and the NGO Association des Frères Auxiliaires for the operation and maintenance of the Centre for a duration of three years.
