Republic of Mauritius- HRDC holds training for automobile mechanics from Rodrigues

In her address, Mrs Gaspard Pierre Louis underlined that Rodrigues is on march towards promoting autonomy in its social, economic and development-related activities. Additional training and learning opportunities are being created for citizens to further develop the competencies of the workforce in Rodrigues, she added.

She recalled the need for public-private partnership in this Programme and spoke of the close link that Mauritius shares with Rodrigues. The Programme, she said, will enable trainees to enhance their knowledge and technical aptitudes in the automotive sector and also address the issue of skills shortage. She thanked the HRDC for their contribution and support and evoked the possibilities of other upcoming projects.

For his part, Mr Auckloo underscored that the HRDC is engaged towards promoting the development of the labour force in Mauritius in line with the requirements of a fast growing economy. The organisation, he stated, is also working towards endorsing a culture of training and lifelong learning at all levels through professional placement and training programmes.

The automotive services sector, he said, is undergoing major changes with the emergence of new automotive models, innovative, hybrid and electric engines and is faced to a lack of skilled labour in car repair and maintenance. It is necessary to train the existing workforce, equip them with adequate knowledge and also encourage other people to join the automotive sector, he added.

Training and Placement Programme

The objectives of the Training and Placement Programme include: helping mechanics in gaining practical experience in terms of up-skilling; develop professional workplace skills; increase their understanding of the work involved in specific fields; enhance their management skills, customer care and other managerial skills required for the proper running of a modern garage.

The Programme will focus on several topics, namely Safety and metrology; Engine; Transmission and Steering; Brake, wheels, suspension and wheel alignment; and Vehicle Electricity. The trainees will be on placement in different garages in Mauritius and will also follow a refresher course spanning over two weeks at the St Gabriel Training Centre of the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development.
