GIS  – 04
May, 2020:
Government has consented for duly
registered fishermen who carry out their fishing activities solely by using fish
traps, to go out to sea, tomorrow, between 7 am and 15 pm, to check or retrieve
if need be, those traps. Only two fishers per boat will be sanctioned and they
will not be permitted to carry out any fishing activity.

This joint decision was taken by the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and
Shipping and the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) given that favourable
weather conditions are forecasted for tomorrow.
It is recalled that this exercise was to take place last Tuesday but had
to be rescheduled following the release of a special MMS bulletin forbidding
any outing at sea due to bad weather forecast.

The present
authorisation to go at sea is applicable exclusively for registered fishermen
and under certain conditions.  As such,
it will be compulsory for fishers to wear masks and gloves and they will have
to carry their fishermen registration cards and ID cards. Moreover, they will
also have to abide by the social distancing and sanitary rules currently in
force due to Covid-19.

These
fishers will have to abide by the safety instructions which will be given by Officers
of the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping,
members of the Police Force and those of the National Coast Guard, who will be
present at the different boat landing locations.  Fishers will only be authorised to verify
their traps and retrieve them if ever there is need for repair.

This
exercise is being carried out to allow fishermen to prepare their traps for the
opening of the fishing season which will take place in the coming weeks.  The Ministry relies on the collaboration of
fishers so that the exercise is carried out in the best conditions.
