GIS – 10 February, 2020: The digitalisation of the health service in Rodrigues is now a reality. The e-Health project, launched in October 2018, at the tune of Rs 17 million, became operational, this week, with its implementation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Crève Cœur.

In this context, a communication and awareness campaign was launched last week and posters and informative brochures were distributed. Community health workers and village community presidents also received their new Electronic Health Cards.

The e-Health system will eventually be launched in all hospitals, including Mont Lubin and La Ferme and will contribute positively to the improvement of the health service in Rodrigues. Indeed, the different tools and services of the e-Health platform will not only help increase the quality of care, but also allow an easier and faster circulation of health data between the different departments of the health system.

From now on, each citizen will have to carry his Electronic Health Card during consultation and patients who receive medical consultations at home have also been integrated into the system.

According to the Acting Director of Health in Rodrigues, Dr Anju Vamben-Rémy, with this new system, all patient files will be on the system and doctors will only have to use a patient’s Electronic Health Card to get his treatment history. Medical confidentiality, she added, is guaranteed since each user, including doctors, will have a numerical code to access it.

The project is being implemented by State Informatics Ltd, a firm that was awarded the contract by the Rodrigues Regional Assembly in 2018. As at date, a total of 36,627 people have registered with the Health Commission.

Several training sessions have been organised for doctors and hospital staff to familiarise them with the new system. Trainees have been recruited under the Youth Employment Programme for the registration of villagers across the island. This exercise took place over a period of three months.
