In a statement, Mr. Snoxell said that the meeting with the Prime Minister was cordial adding that discussions focused mainly on issues relating to the Chagos Archipelago. He recalled that Mauritius and the United Kingdom share very good relation and the United Kingdom will continue to maintain friendly diplomatic discussions with Mauritius.
Speaking on the ruling of the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice in relation to the legal consequences of the separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius in 1965 adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, he pointed out that Mauritius’ claim to sovereignty has been strengthened and recalled that the country had the overwhelming support of the international community. Moreover, he stressed on the need for both countries to show the willingness to engage into further discussions on all aspects of the Chagos issue so as to reach to compromising terms.
