GIS – 23 October, 2019: The Customs Anti-Narcotics Section Officers of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) intercepted on Monday 21 October 2019, a Beninese carrying more than 5 kg of cannabis worth Rs. 3.1 Million in his luggage, at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

The suspect, aged 27, was stopped and questioned by the officers as he was leaving through the Green Channel of the airport. Subsequently, his luggage was scanned and, upon examination, sixteen parcels wrapped with brown cello tape containing the cannabis were found therein.

The case was eventually handed over to Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit for further inquiry.

It is recalled that the MRA is committed to the fight against drugs and illicit trade and has over the years made record seizures. The institution has launched the Stop Drug Platform to encourage the public to provide any information relating to drugs/narcotics trafficking and smuggling, anonymously, with the aim of amplifying its combat against drugs and related illicit activities.
