Republic of Mauritius- Bypass to relieve existing traffic at Mont Choisy-Cap Malheureux Road

This statement was made, yesterday, in the National Assembly by the Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Nandcoomar Bodha, in reply to a parliamentary question as regards the construction of a bypass at Cap Malheureux.

He said that the existing coastal road has a very poor geometry; eight dangerous bends out of which four bends are at 90 degrees, and is narrow with 5.8 m width on average. Thus, the Anse La Raie road will be upgraded and realigned to international norms over a length of 1.2 km for the safety of road users, he added. The existing coastal road will remain in service despite the realignment.

Speaking about the scope of works, Minister Bodha highlighted that it comprises of the construction of a new 7.0 m wide single carriageway road of 2.2 km to link Chemin Vingts Pied and Mont Choisy-Cap Malheureux Road at Anse La Raie in view to reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety at Cap Malheureux; and the upgrading of part of Anse La Raie road over a stretch of 1.2 km to a 7.0 m carriageway with footpath and hard shoulders.

The contract was awarded to Transinvest Construction Ltd on 27 September 2018 for the sum of Rs 207 Million and the project is due to be completed in December this year.
