Republic of Mauritius- A new National Gender Policy to review policies and promote gender equality

GIS – 03 March, 2020: A new National Gender Policy for the next 10 years is being formulated to serve as an effective tool for Ministries and other institutions to review policies and promote gender equality, stated the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah​, today, in Port-Louis at a press conference in the context of the forthcoming International Women’s Day 2020.

The Minister underlined that the Government has committed itself to the principles of gender equality since the Beijing Platform for Action in 1995 that urged collective efforts for an equitable society whereby women are empowered in all domains.

Various initiatives namely the extension of Maternity Leave from 12 to 14 weeks; the introduction of a national minimum wage; and the provision of free tertiary education, which are being taken in this endeavour.

Speaking of the celebrations at the national level, Minister Koonjoo-Shah highlighted that a huge gathering will be held on Sunday 08 March 2020 at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, in Pailles. The Chief guest will be the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.

The theme chosen for this year’s celebration, she said, is Accelerating the realisation for Gender Equality in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5 which relates to achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls.

International Women’s Day celebrations 2020

International Women’s Day, commemorated on 8 March annually, is an occasion par excellence, to celebrate the achievements of women as well as reflect and develop strategies and actions plan to address gender gaps and achieve gender equality. The theme retained by the United Nations is I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights.

Several activities comprising sensitisation campaigns and talks will be held during the month of March by the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare and other stakeholders to mark the International Day.
