Republic of Mauritius- 154 cases of Covid-19 reported within a span of two weeks

This observation was made, this evening, by the National Communication Committee on Covid-19 chaired by Dr Zouberr Joomaye, whereby he reiterated his appeal to the public at large to abide to the confinement and curfew instructions while taking all necessary precautionary measures to avoid further contamination and spreading of the virus. 

Dr Joomaye, expressed concerns as to the behaviour of the population with the reopening of the supermarkets and shops, tomorrow 02 April, to enable the public to buy essential foodstuffs. He called on the population to demonstrate a proper attitude while respecting strictly all sanitary instructions and guidelines being put in place by the Government.   

The Director of Health Services, Dr V. Gujadhur, stressed that the situation is alarming owing to the irresponsibility of certain citizens who are still not respecting the confinement and curfew order. He maintained that if the situation persists, Mauritius will be among the countries where the virus will be spreading at a remarkably relentless speed. Thus, he appealed to the public to act responsibly and abide to all instructions, adding that, nobody is spared from contracting the virus. He insisted that the only way to stop the propagation of Covid-19 is to stay at home.

Dr V. Gujadhur also spoke of the persons in the different age groups who are more prone to contracting the virus especially the elderly who are already suffering from certain illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiac patients. He also explained about the process for conducting contact tracing to identify suspected cases of Covid-19.

DCP, Mr K Jhugroo, for his part, reassured the population that all sanitary measures have already been put in place by all supermarkets and shops with markings for social distancing and added that the police will enforce discipline and see to it that everybody is strictly abiding to the defined rules. As for the various shops across the country, he stated that police will conduct patrols on a regular basis to make sure that the sanitary instructions are being applied.
