I am finally in my motherland, Mauritius – I can’t quite believe I’m saying that after all these years 🇲🇺 My mother was born here, but astonishingly this is the first time I’ve visited this tiny African island in the Indian Ocean 🌍 I’m currently on honeymoon (got married 7 months ago – this holiday feels a long time coming..!), so it’s already a special trip. But made even more so by the fact that I am in the place that makes up half of me 💙

I’m adjusting to the tropical palms, brightly coloured birds, lush mountains and endless fields of sugarcane 🌴 But also, to the sounds of a language that I only ever hear my mum speak when she’s talking to her siblings and my Grand-Mère. Hearing it everywhere I go – spoken by other people! – is intoxicating for me in itself. Shame I don’t understand any of it 🙊 It’s a French-based creole, created on the sugarcane plantations by African slaves, who are the ancestors of Mauritian Creole people.

I can’t wait to learn more about this place and share it with you guys; I’m here for the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, this was today’s lunch had at a place called Creole Shack, set back from the beach at Flic-en-Flac on the west coast 🤤 Coconut prawns bottom, turmeric fried fish top, both with lentil curry, potatoes, achar (pickled veg), satini coco (coconut chutney), jack fruit, lentil soup, rice. A bowl of gajak (various veg coated in chickpea flour and deep-fried – served with HOT chutneys) to start 🔥 And my first Phoenix beer of the trip. I’ll cheers to that 🍻 I bet loads of you have been to Mauritius before – tell me everything please! .
