GIS – 22 October, 2019: The Nomination Day for candidates of various party/Groups as well as independent candidates is being held today 22nd October 2019 across the 21 constituencies of Mauritius. This exercise, is a practice as required by law, whereby potential candidates register themselves prior to the forthcoming general election that is the National Assembly Elections (NAE) scheduled this year on 07th November 2019.

It is to be noted that the writs of elections were issued on 06th October 2019 under section 41(1) of the Representation of the People Act by the Acting President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory, upon the advice of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, for the fixing of the Nomination Day and the Polling Day on 22nd October and 07th November 2019 respectively.

Some 941 719 electors are registered to cast their vote for the 2019 general election which includes the Islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues and Agalega.

It will be recalled that prior to independence (1968), the general election was referred to as the Legislative Council Election; from 1968 to 1991, it was referred as the Legislative Assembly Election; when the country became Republic in 1992 the general election was then referred as National Assembly Elections.

The NAE is conducted in 21 electoral constituencies across the Republic of Mauritius which includes the Islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues and Agalega.  Mauritius is divided into 20 constituencies; Rodrigues is the 21st Constituency and, Agalega, being a small island forms part of the Constituency No.3 in Mauritius.  Prior to 1967, there were 40 electoral constituencies in Mauritius and after the revision of electoral boundaries in 1966, these electoral constituencies were paired into 20 constituencies.
