Real Betis have announced the appointment of Alexis Trujillo as the club’s new manager after they decided to sack Rubi following a 1-0 defeat by Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
The loss left Betis in danger of being sucked into a relegation battle in LaLiga with the team 14th in the table after a miserable run of one win in 10 games.
Trujillo, a club icon who played nearly 300 games for Betis, has been promoted from sporting coordinator and will remain in charge until the end of the season.

‘Real Betis Balompie administration board have decided today that Alexis Trujillo will be in charge of the first team,’ the club said in a statement.
‘The former Green and White player and captain, currently coordinator of the sporting area of the club, will be at the helm until the end of the current season.
‘The club would like to thank Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia “Rubi” and his technical staff for all their services and wish them all the best in the future.

Betis have invested heavily in their playing squad in recent seasons with hopes of eventually challenging the elite in the Spanish top flight.
This season they signed Giovani Lo Celso for £23million, despite later selling him to Tottenham, as well as Borja Iglesias from Espanyol for £25m and also secured highly-rated forward Nabil Fekir from Lyon.
Since resuming their season after the coronavirus suspension the team have played three times, losing twice to Sevilla and Bilbao and drawing 2-2 to Granada.
