Reading ‘Weeds – the story of outlaw plants’ by Richard Mabey right now [* weeds as in ‘unwanted plants’]; where Mabey explores the cultural history of weeds and the definition of ‘weeds’ itself – a conversation I would not believe I would be interested in a few years ago, yet had quite a few time in the last few years [Life is unpredictable, & that’s so awesome]. It’s funny how time goes by, and shift our reality; another conversation I find myself having often that I would not even think about a few years ago is the one about seeds and the freedom to save and share seeds [it’s a bit of a heavy topic to go into in this post, but you should definitely look into it and what’s happening about that on a global scale]. So I was really happy to see a few things happening on the local level on these topics lately.

First was hearing about Le Velo Vert book on ‘practical agro-ecology’ that lists some common weeds found in our local fields, with research being done on the soil they thrive in and hence what they can tell us about our soils [to be honest, that’s the part I was really excited about, but a lot of the research are still in progress, so I’m keeping an eye open for hopefully a second updated edition at some point !], and information about what fauna they can attract and all.

The second was to hear about LaFerm Coco launching the sale of seeds saved from their own farm – hence opening up the access to more local seeds [if you’ve been buying seeds in Mauritius, you know it’s still quite limited, so this is pretty cool to be honest- learning to propagate your own plants is of course a super awesome skill to learn once you have your seeds to start with]. Things are accelerating and changing here too, and it just makes me so happy and hopeful to see these small actions that can create big ripples… While I wanted to talk about these two initiatives today, there’s so many more things that makes me hopeful these days, sometime things as simple as visiting friend’s gardens, or hearing about all their awesome new eco-friendly ideas – so to all of you, thank you for the inspiration and what you’re doing ❤ #bethechange #wereinthistogether
