Premier League’s return to action thrown into controversy as HawkEye fails to signal for Sheffield United goal… before referee Michael Oliver’s watch goes off at HALF-TIME!

  • Aston Villa and Sheffield United met at Villa Park as the Premier League returned
  • There was early drama as the visitors were denied a seemingly legitimate opener
  • Goalline technology controversially ruled that the ball had not crossed the line
  • Pundit Jamie Redknapp said that the technology recorded the goal at half-time

In a season strewn with arguments over technology during matches, there was more drama over a contentious decision as the Premier League resumed with Sheffield United being denied what appeared to be an obvious goal at Aston Villa

Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland flapped at a dangerous inswinging left-wing cross before carrying the ball over the line when teammate Keinan Davis bumped into him.

Fans and pundits were baffled as replays seemed to demonstrate that the ball had comfortably crossed the line and commentators questioned why a VAR check had not been carried out.

Former England and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp admitted: ‘I’m thinking, “why have they not done that?” Goalline technology is normally perfect. You trust it.

‘We’ve actually heard that the referee was told it was a goal while he was in the dressing room at half-time.’

Visiting manager Chris Wilder was seen remonstrating with referee Michael Oliver in the tunnel at half-time as the United boss attempted to ascertain whether speculation that the technology, which tells the referee when the ball has crossed the line via his watch, had failed.
