Porto and Bayern beware! Just ONE team has progressed after a 2-0 first-leg defeat in the Champions League knockouts at home, while the holders will have to make history to overturn their 3-2 loss in Germany to PSG
- Porto lost 2-0 to Chelsea in their Champions League quarter-final first leg
- Only Manchester United (vs PSG in 2018-19) have progressed with this scoreline
- Bayern Munich conceded three away goals to PSG in their quarter-final first leg
- Eight teams have tried and failed to overturn this score in a knockout tie before
The Champions League quarter-finals will be concluded this week and on paper none of the scores are too disparaging – although Porto and Bayern Munich face ominous tasks to progress.
Porto conceded two away goals to Chelsea to lose their first leg 2-0, while Bayern Munich were beaten 3-2 at home to Paris Saint-Germain – the team they conquered in last season’s final.
While those scores seem reversible the away goals rule means that both sides face daunting evenings to progress.

Porto must score at least three away goals to have any chance at progression and reigning champions Bayern’s best case scenario is a 2-0 win in Paris.
However, for both clubs to achieve they will have to produce historic performances.
For Porto, only once in the history of the Champions League has a team lost 2-0 at home in the first leg of a knockout tie and progressed.
The team that night was Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to stun PSG 3-1 at the Parc des Princes during their last-16 encounter in 2018-19.

Rashford’s last-gasp goal saw United win the last-16 second leg 3-1 and progress on away goals
Marcus Rashford’s last-gasp penalty saw United win 3-1 on the night and progress via away goals having levelled the tie at 3-3 on aggregate.
The Red Devils are the only team in Champions League history to have achieved that feat in 18 attempts.
For Bayern, their mountainous objective would be a landmark moment in the competition. No side has ever progressed into the next round after losing 3-2 at home in the first leg. Eight teams have tried and failed beforehand.
