‘Tell Philip to par it in, don’t hit bombs!’: Phil Mickelson’s sister reveals a hilarious text exchange with their nervous mum as the 50-year-old closed in on becoming the oldest Major winner in golfing history

  • Phil Mickelson, 50, sealed a two-shot victory in the US PGA Championship
  • Victory made Mickelson the oldest winner at a Major in the history of gold
  • It wasn’t an easy watch for all his family though, especially his mother

As Phil Mickelson closed in on his historic victory at the US PGA Championship over the weekend, the nerves in his family were reaching new levels.

That is, of course, aside from Mickelson’s brother Tim who works as a caddie for the 50-year-old, who is now the oldest Major winner in the history of golf.

But his sister Tina shared a hilarious text exchange with their mother during the final day of the Major at Kiawah Island in South Carolina.

Mickelson went into day four with a one-shot lead and eventually claimed his sixth major by two shots, with fellow American Brooks Koepka and South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen finishing tied second.

Tagging her brothers in a tweet, Tina wrote: ‘While you guys were busy on the golf course, I was busy fielding Mom’s “nervous texts”’.

The message from Mrs Mickelson read: ‘Tina, txt (sic) Philip and tell him just to par it in.

‘Don’t hit bombs or activate calves. Just par. They will have to catch him. He won’t listen to his mother do you txt him. Hurry.’

Tina’s reply said: ‘I’ll text Tim (his brother and caddy). He’s the only one Phil is listening to today!’.

She also revealed that Mickelson recently felt a new surge of confidence in his game and he predicted that he could soon return to the winner’s circle.

Tina explained on Twitter: ‘Last week at a family dinner: Phil: I had a complete breakthrough/epiphany today. I will win soon. Tim: I can attest to that. Playing best golf in a while. Today was not as shocking as it might have seemed.’

Mickelson’s victory, eight years after he won The Open at Muirfield, has seen the world of golf united widespread acclaim which was led by Tiger Woods.

Taking to Twitter, Woods wrote: ‘Truly inspirational to see Phil Mickelson do it again at 50 years of age. Congrats!!!!!!!’.

Mickelson replied to Woods to say that he is ‘pulling for your quick return’.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath of his victory and his place in the record books, Mickelson said: ‘I just believed that it was possible but yet everything was saying it wasn’t.

‘I hope that others find that inspiration. It might take a little extra work, a little bit harder effort to maintain physically or maintain the skills, but gosh, is it worth it in the end.

I just love this game of golf. I love what I do and I love the challenge of competing against such great players.’
