Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel feels they made a mistake when they sacked David Moyes after just 11 months in charge.

Moyes was selected by club legend Sir Alex Ferguson to be his successor but struggled in his time in charge and was sacked in 2014.

He left the club seventh in the league, 15 points adrift of Arsenal in fourth, but for Schmeichel, if have any regrets, Moyes’ dismissal could be one.

Speaking on beIN Sports, the Danish goalkeeper said: ‘If we should have any regrets at Manchester United, it’s that we only gave David Moyes seven months.

‘I think we should have given him more time, accepted that results weren’t going to be what we hoped and playing would have been a little different.

‘I believe he would have grown into the role. He has the personality and the understanding. He had so many things to learn and no one to learn it from.

‘He was left to run the football department on his own. From the club’s perspective we should never have dismissed him.’

Mike Phelan, who worked under Ferguson, was dismissed by Moyes upon his arrival but now back at the club, he has helped with the revival under Solskjaer.

United fans were quick to voice their disagreement with the Dane with one writing: ‘In my time Schmeichel was the best United keeper I have seen, but he does talk some garbage as a pundit.

‘Moyes was never the right appointment, he couldn’t talk the talk never mind walk the walk.’

United fan Phil Wingate added: ‘Absolute garbage I love schmeical [sic] but he completely wrong here Moyes couldn’t handle the pressure of being the United manager he could of been given 25 years and he’d still not achieve anything the job was too big for him.’

United sit fourth after their win over Fulham on Saturday and have switched their attentions to the visit of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The French champions were overwhelming favourites when the draw was made but form has turned around since and with Neymar ruled out through injury, many are now tipping United to win the opening leg.

Solskjaer, who scored in the final 20 years ago as United won the Treble, is looking to follow the example of Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea by winning the tournament as an interim manager.
