Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘to rush Lingard and Martial back as he doesn’t trust Alexis Sanchez’

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘will rush back Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial’ for Sunday’s visit of Liverpool.

The attacking pair went off with injuries in the first half against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and both missed the 2-0 FA Cup win over Chelsea on Monday.

But according to the Sun, Solskjaer ‘does not trust Alexis Sanchez‘ to take their place in the big derby game and wants to speed up the duo’s return to the side.

Sanchez struggles in a United shirt have continued since Solskjaer’s arrival and he has started the last three matches on the bench.

A disappointing performance away at Leicester City recently saw the Chilean hooked and he has struggled to force his way in since. 

Even with Martial and Lingard out for the FA Cup trip to Chelsea, Sanchez could not lock down a starting spot as he only entered the game in the 73rd minute with the result all but secure.  

Last week Solskjaer compared Sanchez to a bottle of tomato ketchup suggesting that sometimes no matter how hard you try, nothing comes out. 

Lingard and Martial, should they come through Saturday training unscathed and without any flares up of their groin and hamstring injuries respectively, they are likely to find themselves thrust straight into the squad.

But should either or both not make full fitness in time, Solskjaer has faith in his squad depth to pull off another big result.  

‘Every single player has the attributes to give us something and the way we played against Chelsea shows we can cope without them,’ the Norwegian said on Friday.

‘We have got options, it’s a big squad, everyone is eager. They want to play in this game.

‘Some haven’t played so much, so it’s a chance to step forward. If they don’t make it, it might be the same team as against Chelsea. Who knows.’

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool can ill-afford to drop any points between now and the end of the season as they find themselves locked in a fierce battle with Manchester City to win the Premier League title. 

A 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Anfield in mid-December cost Jose Mourinho his job and Klopp’s side will look for similar success against their rivals as they look to boost their title credentials with 12 games to go.
