Coaching merry-go-round continues with Maguire GONE as four-year as Wests Tigers coach comes to and end

  • Wests Tigers have parted ways with head coach Michael Maguire
  • The board convened a meeting earlier today from their Concord headquarters
  • It follows the NZ Warriors axing coach Nathan Brown, Stacey Jones is interim

Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire has coached his last game at the club, with the premiership-winning mentor told his services are no longer required from the board.

A board meeting was called this morning at the Tigers Concord base where chairman Lee Hagipantelis informed Maguire of the board’s decision, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.

Since joining the Tigers ahead of the 2019 season, Maguire was won just 29 of 78 matches, with the club going backwards on the ladder each year he has been in charge.

The side has won just three games this season and sit 13th on the ladder after a disappointing 13th placed finish last year, and whispers of his sacking continued to abound in rugby league circles despite the fact he is contracted until the end of 2023.

Powerbrokers at the club commenced an internal review, their second in less than a year, which was led by head of football, Tim Sheens – and as soon as that was announced, the writing was on the wall for Maguire.

Hagipantelis pulled no punches when asked about the review on SEN last week, refusing to guarantee the job of anyone at the club

‘Will I guarantee anyone’s employment? Whether that be the head coach, the head of commercial or the CEO’s role? No; I will not give that guarantee.’ he said last week.

‘At the moment, we are somewhat disappointed where we sit on the table? Do we need to make some changes? I suspect we do.’

Those changes might not have been swift, but they have been big.

Maguire is the second coach on the merry-go-round to be sacked today, with Nathan Brown axed as the Warriors coach earlier this morning.

More to come…
