Manchester United‘s players were pictured arriving for training at Carrington as their attention switches to a massive game against Liverpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, buoyed by their 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup on Monday, will be full of confidence ahead of the weekend.
They’re also full of running. Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic noted how much energy the midfield are putting into performances under the interim boss.

Anthony Martial pulled up with his team-mates for the session on Wednesday morning
‘I said to the manager we are running a lot at the moment to make our forwards enjoy it,’ he jokingly told club’s official monthly magazine.
Speaking alongside Nemanja Matic he added: ‘Sometimes it is hard for us but, as long as they score goals and as long as they make our fans enjoy the games, we will continue doing that.
‘I don’t know for how long! I am almost 30 and you [Matic] are already 30… as long as they continue scoring goals and we keep winning games we will be fine, but we will probably need a long holiday afterwards!’
Matic then added: ‘Oh, as long as they score three or four goals per game, we are fine. We can play for 10 more years!’
Their assessment begs the question… are they running further for Solskjaer than they were for Jose Mourinho?
Under Jose Mourinho | Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer |
---|---|
Nemanja Matic – 160.7 km (11.76km per 90 minutes) | 102.9km (11.48km per 90 minutes) |
Ander Herrera – 74.0Km (12.22km per 90 minuted) | 82.9km (11.51km per 90 minutes) |

David de Gea will no doubt be key for United against Liverpool at Old Trafford this Sunday
Somewhat surprisingly, the stats don’t back up Herrera’s claims. Under Mourinho he averaged 12.22km per game compared to 11.51km now.
And Matic’s output is roughly the same as it was before, 11.76 under Mourinho and 11.48 under the new boss.
Despite the fact that the numbers don’t quite stack up, the mood and form at Old Trafford has been given a huge lift since Solskjaer’s arrival.
They will hope to carry that forward into the crucial game against old foes Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
Before Wednesday’s training session, inseparable duo Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford arrived together with the midfielder giving his in-form team-mate a lift.

Lingard will be hoping he can prove his fitness ahead of United’s clash with Liverpool after missing his side’s win over Chelsea on Monday.
Anthony Martial is also hoping to be back to full fitness after originally being ruled out for two to three weeks.
