Michael Owen slammed Alexandre Lacazette after the striker was sent off in Arsenal’s 1-0 Europa League defeat to BATE Borisov.

The last-32 first leg was decided by Stanislav Dragun’s header on the stroke of half time, before Lacazette lashed out at Aleksandar Filipovic late on and was swiftly dismissed, meaning he will miss the second leg.

The Gunners star was held back by Filipovic and stuck out on a elbow, and while Owen agreed with the sending off, he felt the defender should have been cautioned for his foul.

On BT Sport, Owen said: ‘It [the one-game ban] could be extended further.

‘I don’t think there is any complaints with the red card at all.

‘What I will say, if I am going to stick up for him, it is very frustrating for any player when you turn your man and you are about to run away.

‘Filipovic has two hands around him as he is trying to run away and it is frustrating. It is not condoning the elbow but he does not even get a yellow for that.’

‘There is no question it is a red card for Lacazette.’

Fellow pundit Martin Keown agreed, indicating that Lacazette knew what his actions would lead to.

He said: ‘There is no complaint from Lacazette, he knows.’
