Mauritius wins three gold medals in swimming finals

GIS – 22 July, 2019: The finals of 50m and 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m backstroke and 4 x 200 medley relay swimming for men and women took place yesterday evening at the state of art sports complex at Cote D’Or in presence of the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.

In the 50m freestyle for participants with hearing impairment, Jeysheeka Rungoo and Ropun Muhammad made Mauritius proud by striking two gold medals with their phenomenal performances. On the other hand, Bradley Vincent earned, for a second time, gold medal for the Mauritian side in the 100m freestyle (men) while Reunion Island secured first position for the women’s category.

With regard to the 100m breaststroke, the women team of Mauritius comprising of the 14-year old Alicia Kok Shun and Ip Hen Cheung, chased down the other competing teams to bag the gold and silver medals respectively. As for the men’s category, Mauritius stood at the third position.

Seychelles sealed the first position in the 200m backstroke (women) while Mauritius won both silver and bronze medals. On the other side, Reunion Island striked gold leaving behind Seychelles and Mauritius at the second and third rank respectively.

As for the 4 x 200 medley relay, the Reunion Island’s team surpassed Mauritius and Seychelles by a notable and impressive display of their swimming skills. Seychelles won silver for women and bronze for the men’s side whilst Mauritius managed to secure silver for men and bronze for women’s category.

Presently, Reunion Island is leading the Games with a total of 38 medals including 13 gold medals while Mauritius ranks second with 39 medals counting 10 gold medals followed by Madagascar with 19 medals.
