GIS – 22 July, 2019: Mauritius qualified for the semi-finals in today’s football match for the Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) 2019 as it drew to a score of 1-1 against Madagascar, this afternoon at the New George V Stadium in Curepipe. The Acting President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory, the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, the Minister Mentor, Minister of Defense and Rodrigues, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint and other personalities were at the game.

It was the Malagasy Team (the Barea), coached by Mr Rakotondrabe Romuald, which opened the score in the 43rd, just before half time.

The Mauritian National Team (Club M), coached by Mr Akbar Patel, equalized from a header by Ashley Nazira in the 59th, bringing the match to a draw of 1-1 and automatically qualifying Mauritius for the semi finals. It is the second goal scored by Ashley Nazira in this tournament. He had scored his first goal last Thursday in the second minute of the match against the Seychelles which also ended in a draw.

In a statement to the press at the end of the match, the Prime Minister lauded the excellent play by the teams and encouraged Club M to do better in future matches, stating that as a football fan, he will do his best to be present for the semi final, which will be held on Wednesday 24 July 2019.

It is recalled that in previous matches, Reunion Island won against the Maldives and Mayotte on the score 4-0 and 1-0 respectively while Mayotte won against the Comoros Islands by 2-0. A draw will be held tonight at 20h00 to find out who between Seychelles and Madagascar will advance to the semi-finals.
