GIS20 July, 2019: The Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) 2019’s Basketball tournament kicked off today at the Phoenix Gymnasium in Phoenix. As an opener for an action-packed week, Mauritius faced the Comoros, both on men’s and women’s side.

The Mauritian women’s national team led by scoring in the first minute itself and comprised of Davy Loreen and Somauroo Corinne, two names that come up most often when mentioning the women’s basketball selection amongst other skilful players. In the second period, the Comoros’ players were more aggressive and brought the match to a draw of 44-44.

The winning team showed confidence while they battled for the top spot against the Comoros. The Mauritius Basketball team defeated Comoros in all sets and sealed the victory with a score of 58-55.

Basketball has been on the list of IOIG disciplines since 1979. Madagascar, absent from the Games in 1979, made an outstanding entry into the discipline in 1985 by achieving the double and has since, never missed the opportunity to place at least one of its two teams on the podium, while Mauritius is still to get its first gold medal in both categories of basketball, notably men and women, bringing bronze medals from the Games. However, after such a display of skill and experience at the preliminaries, the country can count on its pillars to get on the podium for the finals.
