MARK CLATTENBURG: West Ham are unlucky Tomas Soucek’s own goal was allowed to stand in their loss to Tottenham… VAR got it WRONG as the touch off Davinson Sanchez’s arm diverted the ball towards goal
West Ham can count themselves unlucky that this own goal by Tomas Soucek stood with VAR failing to rule it out for a Tottenham handball.
When you look at one camera angle from behind the goal, it’s not evident that the ball touches Davinson Sanchez’s arm en route to Soucek.
But another angle, from towards the corner flag, shows the slightest touch which diverts it towards Soucek, who had no time to react.
Spurs’ first goal came off the arm of Davinson Sanchez, so it should have been disallowed
In the build-up to the first goal, the ball did appear to strike Spurs defender Sanchez’s left arm
The law states that if you gain an advantage in this situation then the goal should be disallowed. We’ve seen similar incidents to this previously.
We may have felt it harsh to disallow but that’s the law, and West Ham will feel hard done by.
For Son Heung-min’s disallowed goal, it was tight, but it was a good offside call.
The benefit of the doubt used to be with the attackers but now, with the new technology, it’s with the defenders. The law’s the law, and VAR followed it correctly.
West Ham can count themselves unlucky to have fallen behind as Spurs gained an advantage
