United have come under increasing pressure to deliver a forward after failing to meet Borussia Dortmund’s demands for Jadon Sancho. The onset of the covid pandemic has hit finances at the club and it has meant they have had to restructure planned bids and consequently their transfer strategy.

They remain in discussions with Barcelona over a potential loan for winger Ousmane Dembele while Cavani would give their forward line a different dynamic and a senior international of vast experience that could bring more out of the younger players around him.

United tried to sign Cavani during David Moyes’ tenure as manager in 2014 and he has remained a player of interest despite entering the twilight period of his career. Cavani remains fit and lean and scored a phenomenal 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG on top of 50 international goals in 116 appearances for Uruguay.

United have considered a number of forward options and many have been offered but Cavani’s signing would make economic and sporting sense as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to mount a serious challenge on domestic and European fronts.

It is possible that Cavani could fly into Manchester today to finalise a move to the club.

United are continuing discussions with Porto over a deal for Alex Telles while Diogo Dalot has left to join AC Milan on loan. The Portuguese full-back follows Andreas Pereira who signed for Lazio last week. Talks over Chris Smalling’s sale to Roma have stalled.
